Hey Nintendo: Wii want to make it personal!

I am a “pro” in tennis on our Nintendo Wii. I wear that badge with honor because, in real life, there’s no way I would ever be ranked as a pro. But the Wii is fun and I love playing Wii tennis with my tween. And apparently I am not alone. According to some new research, the “Nintendo Wii is the most popular among kids ages 8-13, as well as all girls up to age 17, while Sony PlayStation 3 came out on top for boys ages 14-17” in the U.S.

If you are a marketing person or a technologist working on consumer tools and you haven’t played with a Wii, you are missing out. Not only is it fun, but it has the opportunity to become yet another vital “screen” that allows tweens and teens to connect with the brands they care about.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why Nintendo isn’t letting me choose a Wilson tennis racquet to play with and allowing me to select the brand sponsorships I want on my tennis court (see a shot of the tennis court here – can’t you just imagine billboards!?!). How cool would it be for my friends to see how I customized my Wii tennis pavilion? (Note to Nintendo – we’d have to have this be based on each user because I can hear the fight now between my desire to have Desperate Housewives and my daughter's desire to have Hannah Montana – although we'd both agree on Zac Efron.)

If I were with a popular tween/teen brand, I would be banging down the door at Nintendo begging to be part of the Wii experience. I suspect seeing these opportunities become a reality may only be a matter of time.
